"No pressure, no diamonds." - Thomas Carlyle

I'm now attending a three-day seminar on sharing good practices in management. I'm not selling diamonds neither do I have any diamond even if  it's a woman's best friend!

Every time I have a quote as a post, I love reading all the comments from you guys. It becomes like a discussion for us. Now, I'll leave it to you on how you would like to interprete the above quote.

  1. well i guess literally it refers to the formation of diamonds in nature where extensive pressure on carbon forms diamond...but i think it could also mean that for one to achieve anything one must face some pressure and undergo a hard time and hardwork...as they say..no pain no gain :)

  3. 'No pressure, no diamonds' I guess there are many interpretations regarding on which aspects we will apply this great quote, well it's time to ponder again so I have tried to squeeze my mind :)

I choose this one -- no hard work, no success! I guess that pressure above can best describes the means to success, more closely it's about our hard work, patience, effort, etc.

and diamonds-- as I mentioned, it's achieving our goal, it's meeting our needs, it's stepping into the peak of our desires!

    Prime Aque

  5. @Israr - Hi Dr! You're right! In any management, there are visions, missions and goals to achieve. In order to get the desired results, some pressure have to be enforced on the surbodinates to make them work towards it. It's normal to have staffs who are "sleeping", literally speaking, they have to be woken up and geared up for the success of the company or department. It needs a lot of commitments but that's what we're paid for - to strive for excellence.

    Thanks a lot, Dr. :)

  7. @Prime - It's exactly like you said. One quote has various messages. In my case, I'm referring it to management. It isn't something new but as usual, every seminar gives lots of insights. It boosts me to work towards a better and effective management.

In any other cases, hard work is important in order to achieve success. One needs to put lots of efforts in it.

I like your responses on the quote. That's what it's all about. Thank you so much, Prime. :)

  8. @Omo - Yes, that's right! The heat is much needed to get that shiny gold. In its raw form, it isn't attractive but once it has gone through the various processes and stages, the outcome is a beautiful shiny gold! This applies at work. We have to dig for gold and polish it to get the shine!

Thank you so much, Omo. :)

  10. Hey friend, hope you are doing great!
About the quote,i think just like a diamond is formed under extraordinary pressure, and then cutting in a special angle to maintian its perfect refractive index, so as our human ife is! Until we work hard, feel pain and pressure, we won't get anything precious as diamond!
Hope you liked my view! :)

  14. Once I happened to see a movie while on board a bus. The couple's conversation goes like this:

BF: This is for you. (Handling a shimmering diamond ring to the girl.)

    GF: Oh how sweet!

BF: This is a 24-karat diamond ring, this is not sweet. This is expensive!

    GF: (Pouting) Screw you!

    HAHAHAHA

the best and rarest of material gains which are usually obtained after a very prolonged period of time and processing... is likened to the "No pressure, no diamond" quote.
